HOPE:
Trust, high expectations
WELL: A reservoir from which
one may draw
Hopewell
is a common name for churches in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and
elsewhere. The origin of this title seems to be locked in bygone
years. But the linguistic meanings of the word certainly underscore
the spiritual truth of the Hopewell United Methodist Church. Here is
a place of trust and high expectations, a reservoir from which travelers
on the journey of life may draw.
The true life of this congregation began in 1805, just two years after
Ohio became a state, when the Hopewell Society first gathered in the cabin
home of Ezekiel Grooms. In 1819 land was acquired, a cemetery
established, and a structure built. The present building was built
in 1845 beside a newly developed roadway. When the road was
straightened in 1916, a basement was constructed and the church was moved
to its present location. An addition on the east side of the
structure and extensive remodeling took place in 1970, while the integrity
of the original sanctuary remained intact.
Situated in the rural countryside where Franklin and Pickaway counties
meet, Hopewell counts more than a dozen families with roots extending back
to the Church's founders. It also includes new residents in the
community that are growing in number as the Columbus metropolitan area
extends south and east. Here is a place that brings together a rich
heritage and a promising future. Through the people of the Hopewell
United Methodist Church, Christ has touched many lives over many years and
across many miles. And the large number of children are assurance
that this Church will continue to minister in the name of Jesus Christ
well into its third century.
Hopewell celebrated our 200th anniversary in 2005; our past and our
present are united in our future! |
